Is Taxing Pop Really a Solution?
In today's society, there are many things that can make us unhealthy. Some of those things are very tempting and can be hard to say "no" to. Take soda as an example. You know it's bad for you but when you see it in every fast food restaurant, every cafeteria and in every vending machine and especially if it's a hot summer day, you just have to have that refreshing drink down your throat and feel the bubbles on your tongue. But think about it; you are drinking a brown liquid that has tons of sugar in a single can or bottle (sugar free? HAH! yeah right!!) and it's bubbling! That sounds like a natural thing that mother nature intended us to drink.

I was completely disgusted when I saw the commercial with the guy drinking the fat from the soda. That commercial just made me gag and I have to say it is a pretty effective commercial. They didn't just go for the "pop is bad, don't drink it" saying, they actually showed you why it was bad and another reason why it was so effective is because they didn't hold back on getting too graphic. I think that this way, people will really get the point and possibly stop drinking pop.

I also agree with the New York government's idea on putting taxes on pop and if they did enforce the law, I think it would reduce the amount of pop consumed. Let's take the situation happening here in Toronto as an example. The government enforced the law to pay five cents per plastic bag. Since the law has started, I've noticed that there has been a reduction in the usage of plastic bags and I've been running out of plastic bags to use as garbage bags at home but I take that as a good thing. I hope that they do enforce the law not only in New York, but all over the world so that people all over the world will start getting healthier and lead active lives.

Photo Manipulation on Hiatus in the Media
There are so many things wrong with the media these days. One of them is photo manipulation. Photoshop has been a very useful and common tool with many magazines, companies and celebrities. They either exaggerate the curves or waist of women or buff up the muscles on the guys to help sell the product or celebrity. Though sometimes they go too far to the point where you would say, "Okay now that is obviously photoshopped!" Here is an example where I thought it was unnatural to look at.

Most images however aren't as big of a failure as the one above and that is why there are so many people out there who are in so much pressure to feel beautiful and to look like the people they see in the media. What they don't know though is that no one looks like those people! Even celebrities don't look like themselves on the magazines.

It bothers me so much that companies constantly "fix" the images to make it look "perfect" when the pictures are already fine in the first place. I also hate the fact that celebrities can't publish their photos without it being retouched. I guess the reason for this is because their fans and other people in the business expect them to look perfect and flawless. However there are finally some celebrities that are showing how beautiful they are in a different way; by showing their make-up free faces and saying "no" to photoshop. As good as this may sound, not a lot of people in the business agree with the idea and that's why I don't think that it'll take over and change the industry. I do hope though that the trend will stick and
that more celebrities will do the same so that many insecure people will be influenced by them and be more confident with themselves.
When I see a magazine that uses "normal" people on their covers, I find it refreshing because those are the kind of people that you see everyday and I love that those magazines are finally expressing true beauty. I hope I will be able to see more covers with people of all ages, sizes and shapes.

The Changing Face of Video Games
Video games have evolved greatly in the past 30 years. It first started with the simple game of Pong and other classic pixelized games in the 80's. Back then, video games was a new technology that amazed many people all around the world. People's views (mainly adults and parents) started to change their views and thoughts about video games in the 1990's and early 2000's. It was great entertainment at first for everyone but now the parents thought that it was taking over their kids with violence and other inappropriate content. Killing dragons with a level 3 sword replaced doing homework and sometimes socializing. Now there are new games and game consoles that are putting exercise into playing video games and eventually made a new genre, exergames. One of those new game consoles is the Nintendo Wii.
The Nintendo Wii allows people to be one with the player in the game by using a controller with a sensor in it. Now we can golf, cook, fish and play tennis in our very own televisions!! Because that's way more fun than doing it in real life. I think that this new genre of gaming is somewhat beneficial to us because even though it involves movement now, they are still games and it can still get in the way of what is important in life like education, work, family or friends. I don't believe that exergames are wolves in sheeps' clothing I just think that video games will never be completely healthy in a daily basis or they at least still have a long way to go. Here's just a little video to show you how silly it would be if the Wii Fit replaced going outdoors and doing real exercise.
In the Electronic Entertainment Expo (a.k.a. E3) of 2009, Peter Molyneux of Lionhead studios announced Project Natal, a new tool for the xbox 360. (which was later renamed as Kinect and will be coming out in 2011). Natal literally allows you to interact with games without using any controllers as demonstrated in these videos.
I have to say that I am very excited for this to come out but I definitely won't let it take over my life because after all, these are just games.

Social Awareness Contradiction
Today in our society, there are many girls that are feeling pressure and getting intimidated by media to change their bodies and go on diets so that they will be "beautiful". Fortunately, Dove has created a campaign called the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. This campaign holds workshops all over North America and makes young girls realize that they already are beautiful and that they don't need to go through drastic body changes just to be accepted by society. I love this campaign and support it 100%! It's time that the next generation has something to look at other than half-naked toothpicks. Thanks to this campaign, many young girls who were insecure about their bodies are now confident with how they look and they did this not by surgery, but by a change of mind.
Dove's "sibling" company is surprisingly the Axe Effect Campaign. The main message that Axe is trying to get out is if men use their products, girls will love them. I find some of Axe's commercials really funny like this one:
and I find the others to be quite creative and smart like these: (videos)
When I heard that these two campaigns were owned by the same parent company called Unilever, I found it really ironic and i started doubting that Dove really did care about women. But then I looked at it from the business side of view. I guess Unilever is just trying to please and attract all sorts of audiences for more income and I think that the Axe campaign is just some way to earn more profit therefore I don't think that a parent company has any responsibility to ensure that their different sectors upholds the same message. I don't really mind that Dove's "sibling" is Axe because Dove is still a separate company and I believe in their message and in what they are doing.

Ads of the Past - Did They Really Say That?
Advertisements these days do a good job at selling their product or company. Others however may make you question, where in the world did they come up with the idea? But they don't compare to the advertisements that ran in the past. For example, the advertisement about tape worms being food to lose weight would not be accepted in today's community. Another advertisement that people today would question is the ad selling cigarettes by putting a picture of a doctor smoking that brand of cigarettes. I find this really inappropriate because smoking is not at all healthy and I'm sure that the doctor in the picture knows this as well.
The next ad is also an inappropriate advertisement selling cigarettes. The ad says that if a man blows smoke into a woman's face, that woman will be attracted to the guy and follow him everywhere. There are two things wrong with this advertisement. First of all, it is sexist because it's portraying the woman like some stray dog that's going to follow the guy everywhere just because he blew smoke in her face. Second of all, HE'S KILLING HER WITH ALL THAT SMOKE! That's all I have to say about that.
In the end, all of these advertisements are saying the same message. Use their product and you'll be accepted in the society and you will feel great about yourself. I don't know what kind of society would accept unhealthy, dying people but I definitely would not want to be in it and I'm sure that the people who used these products don't feel that great about themselves now. Here are some other advertisements that really did run in the past.

Google Street View
I first heard about Google Street View in the news and i thought that it was really creepy and that it was a bad idea because it's a total invasion of privacy and it's not safe. I then started to wonder if a picture of me was taken in any of these places so I went on the application and searched all the places that I usually would be at like school or at the bus stop. I needed to check because even if Google does blur out the faces of people, you can still identify them by their clothing and the back of their head even. Halfway through my searching, I started to have fun and thought that it was really cool that there's an entire world in this monitor. Maybe this application isn't so bad after all... as long as I'm not in it.
I typed in the places that i wanted to see in other countries like the Eiffel tower in Paris or the place that i used to live in Saudi Arabia. Whoever came up with the idea I think is brilliant but of course, all ideas have their cons. The minute that people heard about this idea, they thought of their privacy. I think that Google should have made a warning or something to tell us that they were going to do this or at least get permission from each neighbourhood or city. Did anybody even notice a car driving around with some 360 degree camera on top?
Google is a very successful, popular company which makes it an engine source that everyone can depend on. Google now has a reputation good enough to make it trustworthy. Therefore I believe that Google knows better than to break any laws and run into any trouble with the government. I trust Google's new tool and i find it very helpful and fun at the same time.
